911 operators have one of the most difficult jobs in American society. They are responsible for helping people at their most vulnerable moments. Before our Police, Fire, or EMS get to a scene and provide help, the telecommunicator is responsible for providing safety and comfort for a person they cannot see.
For those of us who have experienced calling 911 we know it’s a hectic and scary time. Still, in the midst of it all, the 911 operator is a force of calm. It’s an emotionally challenging job, but rewarding too. Saying ‘thank you’ is the least we can do to give back.
Each year for National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week we recognize our 911 center operators with daily celebrations. But it’s the small things, like just saying ‘thank you’ and recognizing people for their hard work that goes a long way.
Whether you’ve ever used 911 before or even if you haven’t, If you know a 911 operator, take the opportunity to say ‘thanks.’
